I love working with Submodalities. I have been fascinated by the unconscious mind since age nine when my brother introduced me to Psycho Cybernetics (Maxwell Maltz). I knew that by affecting the unconscious mind anything is possible! Are you with me here? Does this excite you too?
When I found out how Submodalities work so easily and elegantly to produce lightning fast change, I found it difficult to sleep, thinking of one possibility after another.
Let’s get started. Get a pen and paper, draw a line down the center. Write “Food I love” on one side, and “Food I can’t stand” on the other.
The location is an example of a Submodality. The “modality” is vision, because you are visualizing it. The Submodality is the location. There are many more Submodalities, but the top ones are location, color/black & white, movie/still, picture/panoramic.
Now go ahead and think of a food that you can not stand that has a similar texture to the one you love. When you think of it, do you have a picture? Great! Where is that picture located? Make a note of that. Is it in black and white or color? A movie or a still? Note those as well. Good work!
Now, using something called Contrastive Analysis we can compare the two lists. We would do this to find the “Drivers.” The Drivers are the items that are different. The Drivers are the key to change using Submodalities. Location is the most powerful Driver.
Let’s look at the difference in location for the two foods.
Now, if you want to no longer like that first food, what you would do is “Map Across” the location (and other Submodalities, but that is not always necessary for excellent results). What you would do is to put your hand where the picture is of the food you love. Now remembering where the other food’s picture is located, swiftly move the picture of the food you love over to where you store the picture of the food you can’t stand. Great, now think about what you were doing just before reading this article. This is called a break state. It “seals in” the result.
Please do not try this technique to make yourself like foods that you don’t like, the body has reasons for not liking certain foods.
That was fun wasn’t it! Isn’t it amazing how our minds store different thoughts?
