My Pinay Craving Took Me to Max’s

My feet took me to Max’s Restaurant at the Bonifacio Global City (BGC) for lunch today. My hunger pangs were asking for something to really satisfy my almost shaking body cells as the clock was striking near 12 noon and I got to grab a meal to nourish my drained energy. Today I wanted a balanced meal (combination of meat and veggies) at a reasonable price.

I was greeted by Haya, the waitress who’s going to serve me. She was friendly but a little slow. I chose the fried chicken and fresh lumpiang ubod meal promo of Max’s Restaurant and ordered a refillable sago’t gulaman for my drinks. My verdict as follows:

Fried Chicken: They gave me a small portion of chicken thigh and a cup of steamed rice. The chicken tasted okay, it was just marinated right and I was able to catch that Max’s fried chicken taste in that small portion of the chicken. The house ketchup this time was not as nice as it was when they still had Jufran ketchup. Now it is sweeter and thicker. I will rate my Max fried chicken 3 stars and 3.5 stars with the house ketchup. Cakes are always present on birthdays for both adults and kids. Thank the Germans for starting the annual celebratory of children’s birthdays with cake which then is called Kinderfest. Although many variations of sweets are eaten around the world for birthdays, candle blowing ritual has unknown exact origin. But theories from Greek origin explains that placing candles on birthday cakes is done to honor the birth of the goddess of the moon, Artemis, on the sixth day of every lunar month (in which the round shape of cakes are based to resemble the moon). This can be linked between her oversight of fertility and the birthday tradition of candles and cakes, however, this has not been established.

But on today’s generation, birthdays aren’t complete without blowing candles on cakes. It has been a tradition in mostly any part of this world. P90X Nutrition – My Core Foods

The P90X workouts are tough. But, I tell everyone I coach that its diet, nutrition and supplements that get people the results they’re looking for. The workouts make you fit on the inside, your nutrition makes you look fit on the outside.

I didn’t really follow any nutritional plan or recipes provided by Beachbody during my run through P90X. It’s not that I don’t think they’re good – I just didn’t have the time. I did, however, really pay attention to the caloric ratios that Beachbody recommends for Phase 1. Beachbody says that during Phase 1 you should get 50% of your calories from protein, 30% from carbohydrates and 20% from fat.

What I did was identify a group of “core” foods that I knew by eating, and interchanging daily, would allow me to hit those ratios. I settled on an average of 1,900 calories per day for Phase 1 (the first 30 days) and then just ate combinations of these “core” foods, being mindful of my ratios and calories throughout the day. As I got closer towards the end of the day, if my ratios were off, I’d look for a food that would result in a positive adjustment. Continue reading “P90X Nutrition – My Core Foods”

Emergency First Aid For Gastric Bypass Dumping Syndrome

For patients of gastric bypass weight loss surgery an episode of dumping syndrome, or rapid gastric emptying, is physically dramatic and lifestyle disruptive. Prior to surgery patients are instructed to avoid sweet processed carbohydrates, greasy fried food and all simple processed carbohydrates in order to avoid dumping syndrome. Some patients who become lactose intolerant with weight loss surgery (WLS) experience dumping after eating food that contains lactose: dairy sugar. While most patients comply with dietary guidelines it is inevitable that at some point they will experience an dumping syndrome episode.

Gastric Dumping Syndrome occurs when chewed and partially digested food exits the stomach too rapidly and enters the small intestine. This causes the pancreas to release excessive amounts of insulin into the bloodstream and symptoms of hypoglycemia occur. Dumping Syndrome is most commonly associated with malabsorptive gastric surgery, specifically gastric bypass surgery. The symptoms of dumping syndrome will manifest immediately after eating or within three hours of eating. Each person is unique in the gastric dumping response, however, the common symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, bloating, cramping, diarrhea, profuse sweating followed by chills, dizziness and fatigue. When insulin levels return to normal symptoms subside. Continue reading “Emergency First Aid For Gastric Bypass Dumping Syndrome”

Cadot: Magnificent Yet Unpretentious French Dining In North Dallas

Every once in a while, if you are very lucky indeed and a lover of French food, you will run into (or seek out!) a chef as gifted as Jean-Marie Cadot, the charming and very talented patron of the eponymous Cadot Restaurant at 18111 Preston Road in North Dallas, nestled in a lovely space at the northwest corner of Preston and Frankford.

Cadot, in my opinion, is without question now one of the half-dozen best French restaurants in North Texas, a place of consistent excellence run by a man who has spent three decades perfecting his art. It is also a place of no pretensions and silliness. You will find snow-white linens on your table, flowers, a spotless setting decorated in way that transports you to the Champs Elysee in the springtime, but no fussiness or posturing or affectation. And the prices are remarkably low, I suppose in part because the overhead is not as great as it would be in downtown Dallas.
