Love Chinese Food? Think Twice Before You Order!

Love eating Chinese food? Most of us do, but don’t get fooled into thinking that anything and everything on the Chinese food menu is good for you. In fact, most people look to Chinese cuisine as a healthy alternative to fast food, but the truth is that there are a bunch of pitfalls on the menu, including high sodium and fat contents across several different foods across the typical Chinese menu…

Rice: Almost everyone loves having rice as part of their Chinese menu. The problem is that many people confuse “fried rice” with the much healthier brown rice. “Fried rice” is really white rice that’s brown via soy sauce and oil. It’s also high in fat and sodium. Stay away from the fried rice!

Noodles: Never, ever, ever a good choice! Did I mention that they’re not a good choice? The amounts of oil used to cook this stuff is almost enough for your next oil change!

For Great Gainesville Florida Chinese Food, Try Mister Han’s Restaurant and Nightclub

A recent trip took my companions and myself to Gainesville, Florida. Not being familiar with the restaurant scene in this Sunshine State city, we first consulted Google Maps to see what choices we might have close to our hotel. I narrowed down a few dining options and read reviews penned by past diners. This can often be a tricky situation as it seems many people seem to base their reviews on whether or not they are having a good or bad day. But when you run across an establishment with a few good reviews to one rant that has nothing to do with food or service, then you can feel a little secure in the fact that the restaurant is probably a good one.

So after reading a few positive reviews, I clicked over to Mr. Han’s Restaurant and Nightclub website to review the menu.

The home page of this Gainesville, Florida Chinese restaurant boasts that they have won numerous awards from local publications and local diners. They also boast a few celebrity patrons including George Burns, Robin Williams, Rodney Dangerfield, Bob Hope and Billy Crystal. We later discovered that Mister Han’s is in close proximity to a comedy club. Continue reading “For Great Gainesville Florida Chinese Food, Try Mister Han’s Restaurant and Nightclub”

Eczema Diet – Seven Chinese Food Secrets That Will Change Your Life

Eczema can make life a misery for children as well as adults with red, dry, thick and scaly skin that is constantly itching. For many people, eczema is triggered off by an allergic reaction to specific foods and avoiding these foods can relieve the symptoms. Chinese dietary therapy is a holistic system of treatment, part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which looks at diet in a completely different way from our western diets. Here I will give you my Seven Chinese Foods secrets that will help your eczema and change your life.

1. Avoid cow’s milk

Often eczema can be triggered off by cow’s milk which is a common food fed to children. Cow’s milk is very damp in nature and if your child’s digestive system is compromised can cause itchy skin, rashes and oozing and weeping lesions. Milk is not a common ingredient in a Chinese diet and is used sparingly. However, in the West we tend to over consume milk which is why more and more people are experiencing an allergic reaction to it. If your baby is suffering with eczema then you really should look for an alternative. Possible replacements are soy or goat’s milk which are less damp forming. Chinese Food, American Style

It is often a standing joke that what Americans consider to be Chinese food is totally of our own making, and cooks and diners in China would find them completely foreign (like chop suey–what on earth is that?). But somewhere along the line, Chinese food was adapted from our Asian immigrants, Americanized and became wildly popular, not only as a take-out but served buffet-style and sit-down as well. Many dishes are accompanied by plain white, brown or fried rice. Let’s review our most popular:

Dim Sum: bite-sized dumplings stuffed with veggies or meat, essentially a Cantonese preparation not always offered at many restaurants; can be also presented as small sampling dishes, depending on the menu and the cook’s whim; Continue reading “Chinese Food, American Style”

Where Can I Buy Medifast Locally? I’ll Tell You

The other day, I received an email from someone who had searched the phone listings and the Internet high and low for a Medifast clinic or store near her town so that she could buy some of the products. She wrote in part: “Maybe I’m not looking in the right places, but I just can’t find a Medifast vendor or outlet near me anywhere.” Her experience is not all that rare. I’ve gotten many similar emails from others. In the following article, I’ll explain why, (unless you live in one of the few states that have these clinics), you’re likely better off just ordering the foods directly from the company.

Folks In The Following States Are Able To Buy Medifast Locally: As I alluded to before, there are only a handful of states (that I can find) within the United States which have Medifast clinics. They are: Maryland; California; Texas; Florida; Arizona; Georgia; and South Carolina. Some of these states have quite a few centers (like Texas and California) and some have only a few (like Florida.)

Cities With Clinics Or Centers: For example, greater Texas has centers in Addison, Arlington, Allen, Bedford, Ft. Worth, Garland, Highland Village, Irving, North Richland Hills, and Plano. The Houston area itself has many stores too. Examples are Atascocita, Cinco Ranch, Spring, Sugarland, Pearland, Webster, and The Woodlands. In the Austin area, there are clinics in Cedar Park, Round Rock, and Sunset Valley. Continue reading “Where Can I Buy Medifast Locally? I’ll Tell You”

Labeling Yourself With "Binge Eating Disorder", "Compulsive Overeating Disorder" or "Food Addiction"

Nearly every self-help book or article I’ve read on binge eating disorder or food addiction has a section to help the reader decide if he or she really has binge eating disorder, compulsive overeating disorder or is a “food addict”.

Often there’s a checklist with questions like, “Do you eat more than you intended more than 3 times per week?” Or “Do you hide how much you eat?”

These books or articles are often written by someone that has no personal experience with binge eating, or by people who believe in addictive disease. By asking questions like this, in their opinion, they’re setting you up to conclude you have a problem.

Five Fascinating Food Facts That Are Weird

Now, these food facts just might keep you amused, especially for those of you on holiday. Besides you may find one or two so fascinating that you’ll trot them out next time you’re out for dinner, (although I’m not sure if your guests will approve of a couple of them.)

1. In Brazil one of the most popular pizza toppings is peas. Yes, the little green pea. Well, did you know those peas pack a pretty powerful punch? (lots of p’s)

They are not only a great protein source but they’ve got vitamin K, manganese, thiamin, copper, vitamin C, phosphorus and folate. However, their real superpower is that they have a myriad of potent antioxidants including high amounts of a polyphenol called coumestrol – this just may lower your risk of stomach cancer. So don’t just roll those peas around on your plate – dive into them and enjoy their nutritional power.

More Dining Options at The University of West Florida

As a current student at the University of West Florida, I frequently eat at the dining options that are available on campus. My freshman year, I had the displeasure of having a meal plan. Where I was forced to eat 12 meals a week at the Nautilus Market, an all-you-can-eat option. In addition, I had to spend $300 at another vendor on campus. It was required and overpriced. I am proposing that the University of West Florida provide students with better on-campus dining options.

Currently, there are 11 places to grab a bite to eat while on campus. However, four of them are just grab-and-go cafes, so I would not consider these as viable options. These cafes are good in their locations. They are in specific buildings like the business building and the library. These are good options if you are in a hurry.
