Sichuan Peppercorns

Pepper, the most widely used and traded spice in the world has a history that’s as pungent and spicy as its flavor. Countries have been discovered, conquered, wars have been fought, treaties have been signed and entire populations have been subjugated in the search for this Black Magic spice. In medieval Europe, pepper was so treasured that it was even used as currency.

In medieval times, spices like pepper were used to enhance the preservation of meat though it was by no means the only preservative that was used. Pepper’s mild yet aromatic taste was much cherished by civilizations ranging from the ancient Greek, Roman and Chinese to modern American and Asian. Originating in the Malabar coast of India and in Sarawak, there are many different varieties and cultivars which are prized for their distinctive flavors and colors. Chinese Dragon Boat Festival – A Commemoration of National Hero Qu Yuan

A significant festival celebrated in China with the longest history, the Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month to commemorate the patriotic poet Qu Yuan.

Qu Yuan, a Chinese national hero who drowned himself into the Mi Luo River in 277 BC to react against the corrupt and incompetent rulers. Qu Yuan was a minister of the state Chu, which aligned with another state with increasing power named Qin. Qu Yuan was dubbed a trader and was expelled to the frontier region, and it was during that period he wrote what was considered as China’s first great poetry. When Chu was gradually conquered by Qin, Qu Yuan waded into a river out of distress and patriotism for Qin. The legend goes that people beat drums to keep fishes away and throw dumplings to the sea to prevent the fishes from eating Qu Yuan’s body, which accounts for the reason why Chinese eat Zongzi and hold dragon boat racing competitions as a day of mourning Qu Yuan’s death.

Beijing Buffet

The variety of foods that can be enjoyed in San Francisco is remarkably broad: Italian, Middle Eastern, Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian, Indonesian, and Vietnamese. However, I cannot list them all. Even compared to New York City, San Francisco’s variety of food does not lose its excellence.

In addition, the cost for enjoying these fabulous foods is amazingly reasonable. I consider buffet-style restaurants to be the most cost-effective. About two years ago, we found an extremely good Asian cuisine buffet restaurant, the Beijing Buffet, close to the San Francisco Airport. I referred to several rating sites before writing this article, and the ratings varied from person to person. However, the general rating was average. My own experience at this restaurant has been good, and my wife and mother-in-law love it as well. Because my wife is a Chinese American who was born in China, her sense of taste for authentic Chinese foods is trustworthy.

Hong Kong Bistro – Chandler, AZ

Having traveled around the world with many trips to Asia, I am partial to excellent Chinese food. Also, I’m quite critical of restaurants that do not measure up for me personally. But, when you come across any of my reviews, they are positive-if I don’t like the establishment, I don’t take the time to write about it.

Since we moved to Gilbert, AZ in April 2006, Norm and I have been searching for an exceptional Chinese restaurant in the East Valley. Several times, we passed Hong Kong Bistro on the corner of N.W. corner of Chandler Heights and Gilbert Road. In early Spring of ’08, we decided to give it a try. Our search resulted in an experience that was right on the mark. Hong Kong Bistro is a terrific value for the quality of its food.

We’ve returned to the restaurant more times than I can count. I’m open to trying something different each time, but Norm tends to prefer the Mo-Shu Pork, while tasting my entrees. Continue reading “Hong Kong Bistro – Chandler, AZ”
