Toasted Sandwich Maker FAQ

For people who already own a toasted sandwich maker, this article will be of little relevance. Rather this FAQ is aimed at people who do not currently own one. It may be useful in helping them decide whether this sort of kitchenware will be useful or not.

What is a toasted sandwich maker?

Toasted sandwich makers are a kind of hot sandwich making machine. They are not the same thing as a panini press. Panini sandwich making equipment is typically more expensive and at the same time more versatile. These sorts of toasters can be used to make things other than hot sandwiches. However the sorts of machines that this article is discussing are designed solely to make toasties. A toastie is a hot toasted sandwich.

How are they powered?

There are typically two kinds of hot sandwich machines. One is stove top varieties and the other are electrically powered models. Those powered by electricity are more common. All you have to do is connect the power cable to an electrical wall socket in the kitchen and the unit will automatically start to warm up. Continue reading “Toasted Sandwich Maker FAQ”

Spicing Up a Grilled Cheese Sandwich

My mom recently had the flu. As she was recovering one of the things she most wanted was a grilled cheese sandwich. I know my own kids have often ordered grilled cheese sandwiches when we go out to coffee shops for dinner. And almost all restaurants have grilled cheese sandwiches on their children’s menu.

I have many ideas to spice up the ordinary grilled cheese sandwich:

oAdd a slice of meat to your sandwich. We very often add turkey. Other folks will add a slice of ham or a slice of bologna. You can also add already cooked bacon or any other lunch meat. If you have a leftover slice of meatloaf, add that to your grilled cheese sandwich.

oVary the types of cheese you use. Add one slice of swiss cheese and one slice of cheddar cheese. Every cheese has its own distinct flavor. You can also experiment with low fat and fat free cheeses. Use one slice of regular cheese and two slices of fat free cheese. If you like spice, try some of the spicy cheeses. My daughter loves jalapeno Monterey jack cheese. We have also bought dill flavored havarti cheese. Each of these cheeses brings a wonderful flavor to the sandwich. Continue reading “Spicing Up a Grilled Cheese Sandwich”

Karabij – A Middle Eastern Cookie

Karabij is a popular Middle Eastern cookie served with Natef. Natef is a special white cream used for dipping with Karabij.

Karabij are one element in the Middle Eastern cookies family, which in turn is a class of Arabic sweets. It is a cookie made of semolina dough, which makes it very delicate and easy to break. It is baked, and it is abundant in pistachio nuts.

While other Middle Eastern cookies like Mamoul and Mamoul-Mad are filled with many types of nuts such as pistachios and walnuts, as well as dates, Karabij on the other hand is always filled with only pistachios. Even though it is perfectly possible to use a walnuts or dates filling with Karabij cookies, it has been the custom not to do so and to use only pistachio nuts filling with Karabij.

Karabij are essentially small pistachios filled Mamoul cookies. They share the same ingredients as Mamoul and are prepared and baked in the same manner. However, Karabij are usually smaller in size than Mamoul because they are intended to be dipped in Natef. Even though Mamoul is made into different sizes, Karabij are always made into a small longitudinal shape easy to use for dipping. Continue reading “Karabij – A Middle Eastern Cookie”

The History of Cupcakes

While no one is quite certain where cupcakes came from, it is known that they made an appearance in the United States sometime in the 19th Century. Called Fairy Cakes in the United Kingdom, cupcakes revolutionized how cake was made and mothers across the land lauded the blessing.

Prior to the introduction of the cupcake to the kitchens of America, cakes were made by weighing the ingredients. Cupcakes were made by measuring the ingredients for the first time. It has been suggested that this is perhaps where the term “cup cake” originated, since everything was measured in cups. Other origins of the name have also been offered, such as the fact they are baked in a cup but at one time, cupcakes were also called “number cakes”. This name originated from the recipe, whereby it required “…once cup butter, two cups sugar, three cups flour, four eggs…” At one time, recipes called for cupcakes to be “…baked into little tins.”

Until the turn of the 20th century, cupcake pans were virtually unheard of forcing bakers to use more formidable cups for baking, unless they wanted to bake their small cakes into loaf form. Using hearth ovens, which needed longer cooking times for larger cakes, caused bakers to seek other ways to bake their cake and still have time to eat it. With the advent of the cupcake, not only were bakers able to achieve shorter cooking times, they were also able to change the way they prepared them once the baking part was finished. No longer did bakers need to create larger, heavier cakes. With the production of the cupcake, people could slake their desire for something small and sweet. The Foods You Eat Can Change Your Skin Colour

In case you haven’t heard, you are what you eat. Perhaps you won’t turn into a chocolate chip cookie,

but there are certain foods that can increase or decrease your melanin production.

Melanin activates the pigmentation of your skin, making in darker when more melanin is being produced by the body. So, depending on the look you are hoping to achieve, eating certain foods can increase the melanin, while avoiding these foods will stagnate it.

Light coloured foods will give you whiter skin. Foods such as eggs and milk will dilute the melanin and keep your skin lighter coloured. On the other hand, the same theory applies to dark coloured foods. Deep, dark foods like coffee, tea, and black sesame can make your skin appear darker.

Vegetables and fruits contain many minerals and nutrients such as zinc, iron and copper. Lemons and cucumbers are excellent examples of foods rich in these minerals which aid in the formation of melanin. Strawberries, on the other hand can reduce melanin, keeping your skin lighter.
