The Unhealthy Convenience of Frozen Waffles and Pancakes

Okay, I’ll admit it, last week I found myself over in the frozen food section of my local grocery store looking at pancakes and grabbing a box of waffles. I even made the mistake of purchasing the box because in all reality it’s a convenience food and the kids love them. Yet, I’m no stranger to the fact that’s they’re extremely unhealthy.

We’ve all been tempted and for many of us it’s an ongoing battle. It’s easier to throw breakfast in the toaster rather than cook something from scratch. Our lives have gotten so busy that we simply don’t have time to slow down and really enjoy life.

Unfortunately, many of the foods we eat like the common waffle and pancake are loaded with chemicals and sugars. There isn’t any real nutritional value to them unless you add some fresh fruit and even then, they’re still not healthy.

Some of the ingredients you’ll find in these convenient breakfast foods are flour, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, sugar, salt, yellow # 5, yellow # 6 and reduced iron. All of these ingredients are extremely unhealthy and even dangerous.

Yellow # 5 and 6 are both dyes. So, why would a manufacturer add such an ingredient to our food source? Simple. It’s to give it an appealing color. It has no nutritional value whatsoever. Both dyes have been known to cause allergic reaction in some people including vomiting, diarrhea and swelling. It has also been linked to hyperactivity in children.

As scary as those dyes might seem, they are the only things that can cause serious damage to your body. As a matter of fact, the syrup that you pile onto that waffle or pancake can be just as bad, if not worse. The main ingredient of many pancake syrups is high fructose corn syrup and that’s a heart stopper all on its own.

So if you must have waffles or pancakes, why not make your own? That way you know what ingredients are put into them. And if you think you need the idea of convenience, they can be frozen just as well as the commercial brands. And the really great bonus is they’re not as unhealthy as the store brands! So, eat wisely and live healthy. Your body will thank you for it!
