Pros and Cons of Eating Chocolates

Hot chocolate, chocolate cake, chocolate chip cookies, chocolate brownies, and the list goes on forever, especially for chocolate lovers but do you really know what these chocolate delicacies can do for your health?

First,we will talk about the positive effects or, in other words, the pros of eating these sweets. Scientific researches have shown and proven that chocolates contain large quantities of antioxidants. Antioxidants are chemicals that help us to neutralize some of the harmful chemical reactions occurring as part of our metabolism and during exposure to pollutants. Chocolates are also said to benefit the circulatory system by promoting good blood flow. Some people have even said they noticed a moderate drop in their blood pressure when eating dark chocolate daily.

Eating chocolate helps to make you feel good. It increases brain levels of several chemicals, including mood-altering chemicals, phenylethylalanine and anandamide, which produce a mild, confidence-boosting effect. It also contains tryptophan, a chemical that lifts a person’s mood and theobromine, a stimulant that energizes you. It is also an anti-cancer substance, a brain stimulator, and its prevents cough and diarrhea. These sweets have a good reputation as an aphrodisiac. Some studies have shown the candy also helps slow down the decline of brain functions as people age. Continue reading “Pros and Cons of Eating Chocolates”

Coconut Dream Cookies With Mini Chocolate Chips, a Sweet Treat for College Care Packages

My twin grandchildren, one male, one female, returned to college last week. One attends a large state university the other attends a small private school. Both of my grandchildren are please with their college choices. This year, instead of living in a dorm, my grandson is renting an apartment with three home-town buddies.

There are two bedrooms in the apartment and each has two beds. One room is for “The Neats” and the other room is for “The Slobs.” The kitchen is small, but efficient, and the young men will be preparing their own meals and cleaning up after themselves. One of the roommates is a pretty good cook and so is my grandson.

Last year I sent my grandchildren care packages from home and they were a hit. In February I sent them Valentine boxes. I tucked a small teddy bear in my granddaughter’s parcel. She liked the contents so much she photographed them.

List of Herbs and Seasonings for Oven Roasted Vegetables

Grilled or oven roasted vegetables are easy to prepare and provide good healthy food. Roasting vegetables is a quick and easy way to add variety to a meal, whether roasted in the oven, on the stove top, or on a grill.

Many of the vegetables are delicious plain, with no seasoning at all. That is especially true for those of us who enjoy the taste of raw or steamed vegetables. Slow roasting vegetables adds a different texture and enhances the flavor, especially those more-bland foods like cauliflower or some squash.

Salt and pepper can be added to any vegetable to enhance the flavor. However, with many low-sodium diets, we need to find other ways to improve the flavor. One great way to add flavor without compromising the nutrition value is to add herbs as the vegetables are cooking.

Here are some herbs and seasonings I have found good additions to roasted vegetables. Continue reading “List of Herbs and Seasonings for Oven Roasted Vegetables”

Metaphors in the Soup Pot

If it’s fall, it’s time for soup!

Fall calls us to come inside, take those wools and warm socks from the bottom drawer. When dark comes earlier in the day, soup calls.

The story of a good soup – in its early round pots or in today’s shiny all-clad flat bottom brands – remains a favorite topic of story writers everywhere.

When the aroma of fresh vegetables simmering for a soup fills any everyday kitchen, the aroma signals a sigh and feeling of “coming home.” That familiar smell brings a kind of satisfaction and reassurance about food and eating of course. But it’s also a satisfaction about life in general. A pot of soup and a good story can do that.

Soup stirs up the literary in us.

The soup pot and melting pot are often used interchangeably as over-worked metaphors of two seemingly opposite truths: Continue reading “Metaphors in the Soup Pot”
