Ode to Sauerkraut

Sauerkraut directly translated means sour cabbage and is a very typical German food. Sauerkraut is finely sliced fermented cabbage and has a very distinctive sour flavor.

A popular German dish is Sauerkraut served with Schupfnudeln (potato noodles). However, you can serve your Sauerkraut with roast pork or sausages. It is a popular beer garden food.

Sauerkraut, like all cabbage recipes, is of course, very healthy, full of vitamin C and other nutrients. However, one word of warning, if you are not used to eating it, be careful, as it can upset the stomach.

I learned how to make sauerkraut from my wife’s grandmother who is German. In this recipe I am trying to incorporate all my answers to the different questions that I have been asked when I have posted this before. Continue reading “Ode to Sauerkraut”

Tips to Find the Best Food Importers and Distributors

For any successful food based business to function without any major problems it goes without saying that quality food distributors and food importers are essential. Even though many FDA rules and regulations have been formulated for safe importing of fruits and vegetables, many fruit importers or vegetable importers still manage to avoid regulation, thus making food consumption unsafe. To ensure that you choose the right food distributors and importers here are a few helpful suggestions.

When looking for a quality fruit or vegetable importer and distributor it’s always best to research and find out how long they have been in business and most importantly what their track record is. Find out how reliable they are and if they actually deliver within the stated delivery time. Make sure your food importer or food distributor is honest and reliable. Try to consider working with local vegetable and fruit distributors. There is always a reduction of overhead costs if your food importer or distributor could be found locally. How To Become Strong Like Popeye Eating Spinach!

When I was growing up, Popeye was all the rage and he helped mothers push the claim that spinach was good for you. He’d pop open a can of spinach, wolf it down, and then be super strong and able to defeat the bad guys. For most kids, though, spinach still didn’t really catch on. When we did eat spinach, it was usually overcooked and robbed of many of its nutrients.

Many of us these days are trying to eat healthier meals, substituting salads for soups and other lunch or dinner favorites. What quite a few people overlook, though, is the benefit of using spinach for your salad instead of other leafy greens. That’s really too bad, too, because raw spinach makes a delicious salad and offers twice as much fiber as other greens, filling you up faster and still providing you a myriad of health benefits. What’s Your Favourite Flour?

Flour has always been an integral element of Indian food fundamentals. It doesn’t matter whether the kitchen is from the North of India, from the South, from the East or the West; every homemaker depends in a major way on one core flour type for her daily preparations.

The interesting part is that most kitchens in modern India rely heavily on one particular kind of flour – like the Besan Flour or wheat flour or rice flour. What’s all the more disturbing is that due to the advent of western cuisine and fast-food influence, over independence and invisible dominance of some not-so-healthy varieties like the refined flour (also called Maida), have started showing some unpleasant effects.

Lifestyle diseases like obesity and blood pressure imbalance are on the rise. At the same time, deficiency of important nutrients is gaining widespread impact in every other household.

Shirataki Noodles – Are They A Super Food?

If you’re trying to lose weight, by now you may have heard of shirataki noodles. These noodles were invented by the Japanese over 2000 years ago.

Shirataki noodles are made from flour ground from the bulbous root (or corm) of the Konjac plant. This flour is known as konjac flour and is not a carbohydrate like traditional flour. It is 100% soluble fiber which is combined at a ratio of 3% to 97% water to create a solid gel. When left in blocks this gel is called konnyaku. When formed into noodles it is called shirataki which means ‘white waterfall’. Traditional konnyaku is grey in color from the addition of seaweed to the mix.

Konnyaku and Shirataki are effectively calorie free since the human body is incapable of converting fiber into energy. Even if konjac flour were a traditional carbohydrate, a 100 gram serve of shirataki would contain only 12 calories based on the three grams of fiber it contains and the fact that one gram of carbohydrate contains four calories. Finding a Pizza Delivery That Gives the Service You Desire

Pizza delivery can be anything from a local national chain to the little mom and pop shop down the road. Before choosing someplace for your weekly pizzas, you will want to find a shop first that has the type you like. It is also important to find one that delivers on time and with excellent customer service.

Some pizza delivery companies guarantee your pizzas will arrive in the time stated or you get them free. This can put a lot of pressure on the drivers. It could end up causing accidents or even deaths. Rather than giving you an unrealistic time and placing the blame on the driver, a good company would give the time it would actually take for the pizzas to be made and the length of time for the drive. This will put the driver under less pressure, and when he or she arrives, will be able to treat you as the customer with better service. Aspartame (The Artificial Sweetener) Is Renamed AminoSweet, But It’s Still An Excitotoxin

Aspartame is a man-made substance that’s 200 times sweeter than sugar. Unlike sugar, however, Aspartame has almost no calories. This, of course, is why it’s used by food manufacturers and by individuals as a substitute for sugar and other caloric sweeteners. Aspartame was once the most popular artificial sweetener in the world, but this distinction is now held by sucralose (Splenda). Still, there are over 6,000 products made with aspartame, including drinks, foods, gums, candies and medicines.

Aspartame was discovered by accident in 1965 and was first introduced into our food supply in 1981. It’s frequently blended with acesulfame potassium to make it taste more like sugar and/or with maltodextrin to make it more heat stable and to extend shelf-life. Aspartame is available to individuals for table-top sweetening as both NutraSweet and Equal.
