History of Ketchup

Ketchup dates back as far as 1600 AD when sailors traveling to China discovered a sauce made of soy or oysters called ‘ketsiap’. This

version quickly changed ingredients to include mushrooms, anchovies, shallots, and lemon peel. Then in the late 1700’s tomato ketchup

appeared in Nova Scotia and began the transformation to today’s sweet tomato version.

Ketchup began to be commercially available in the United States during the 1830’s when a New England farmer bottled and sold his version of

the tomato condiment. In 1837 ketchup gained in popularity when Jonas Yerkes bottled and sold ketchup in quart and pint sized bottles.

Then in 1872 HJ Heinz began to sell what we know today as Heinz Ketchup. Heinz’s recipe is the same today as it was when he placed this popular

Food Remedies For IBS – Pineapple

I am a firm believer that natural foods we eat everyday has healing properties to assist our body to recover from non critical ailments and aid in recovery process as well. If we take the right food, in the right amount, the vitamins and minerals found in the food will strengthen our body systems. It can improve digestion, which in itself is a prerequisite in healing of the body. With better digestion, the body can absorb the necessary minerals and vitamins, which in turn will repair the body. This is especially true for IBS sufferers.

So the first food remedy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome sufferers is pineapple.

Pineapple helps in digestion. Find a fresh ripe pineapple and eat it fresh. Make sure only ripe pineapples are eaten. Unripe pineapple has poison which can cause drastic purging. If fresh ripe pineapples are not available, you can resort to the canned ones. Cutting the pineapple is an art. Be generous in cutting the skin of the pineapple. You need to remove the crown, rind, eyes and core. A method to remove the eyes is to slice crosswise. You can only eat the flesh. Chilled fresh pineapple is not only refreshing but also delicious. As much as you may like pineapples, do not over eat pineapples either since excessive pineapple can cause fiber balls in the intestinal tract. Just like everything else, excessive consumption should be avoided. In right quantities, it is a healing food. Continue reading “Food Remedies For IBS – Pineapple”

Fix Dull Skin Tone Fast – Effective Exfoliating Tips For Your Skin

Have you looked in on the mirror lately and saw a tired-looking person staring back at you? That is you with your skin at its worst. Dull skin tone has a way of creeping up on us without us noticing. We are too caught up in our fast-paced lifestyle that we usually fail to check the condition of our skin.

Dull skin tone is just one of the initial signs of skin aging. It is your skin’s way of saying that it is not healthy enough. If you want to instantly fix this problem, you have to exfoliate. Let me tell you a couple of great ideas on how to exfoliate your skin:

1. Use nuts.

Bacon Wrapped Chestnut Fritters – A Special Treat Cooked Perfectly In Your Toaster Oven

Long ago Chestnut trees were plentiful in North America. They actually made up about a quarter of the native forest when European colonists came to these lands. Chestnuts were abundant, delicious and free. This is why the chestnut was so prominent in early American cookery. I love reading old cookbooks and recipe collections. I often try to adapt those recipes to modern-day ingredients and cooking equipment as well as our evolved taste buds. That is exactly what I did with an old pork-wrapped chestnut fritter recipe.

Where are the chestnut trees now? The North American variety is close to extinction. It was wiped out by a disease carried on an imported tree in the early 1900s. Those abundant, wild chestnut trees no longer fill our forests. There are, however, many hybrid chestnut varieties that are grown on farms. So while you can’t pick free chestnuts from the forest like early Americans did, you can find fresh chestnuts at many health food and specialty stores. This recipe is a bit involved and time-consuming, so this is something I only make on holidays and other special occasions. Tools For Juicing

Hand Juicer

For the simplest juices this is all that you will need. A small stainless steel manual juicer or a plastic one with collection cup can be found for $15 or less. Combined with a good knife and cutting board, this tool will be all you need for occasional juicing.

Optional Utensils

A citrus squeezer is handy for quickly juicing lemons and limes. A wheat grass juicer is a hand cranked extractor for recipes using wheat grass and other soft leaves. A mango corer is a handy tool to have when using fresh mango in your juices. Oxo makes one that sells in many grocery stores for about $12.

Electric Juice Extractor

When you want to make juicing part of your lifestyle or go on a juice diet, you will more successful if you have an electric juice extractor. Breville, Black & Decker, Hamilton Beach and Jack Lalanne are some of the most popular brands. The heavy duty juicers have a feed tube, much like a food processor, and a mesh filter that separates the pulp from the juice. Most fruits can be fed whole into the extractor, making juice preparation quick and easy. These units yield much more juice than a manual juicer, and the pulp can be composted or used in many recipes. Continue reading “Tools For Juicing”

Zchug: Israeli Salsa

Zchug, a type of chili sauce from Yemen, migrated with Yeminite Jews to Israel. Hot with chili, pungent with garlic and fragrant with exotic cardamon, it has become the Israeli national condiment. Think ketchup to Americans and salsa to Mecxicans, kim chee to Koreans. Without these blessed sauces, national cuisines would be bare naked indeed. Why is tschug so popular? It’s hard to say, but it seems to be because its sweat-inducing fire is a good fit for the hot desert winds that blow intermittently in every country ringing the Mediterranean.

You may not have time to take a trip to Israel, but surely you can catch a taste of the land by making some tzchug. Make this right and you will start to get an idea of Israeli cuisine. Here’s how to make yourself a bit of delicious zchug. Watch out, though, it’s spicy hot! Continue reading “Zchug: Israeli Salsa”
